Q3W5

First Grade News

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a great weekend! We enjoyed seeing many of our families at family game night on Friday!

In Literature this week, we will begin practicing our new poem, The Swing, by Robert Louis Stevenson. We will also read some of Aesop's Fables, focusing on "The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing."  Finally, we will learn about adjectives and complete a self-portrait using words that describe us.

Reading logs are due this Friday, February 14th, due to the R&R weekend.

Please send in Owl At Home as we will begin reading this classic the week of the 17th.

There is no school on February 17th in observance of President's Day.

In Math, we will continue Chapter 8 and begin counting money, focusing on the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Scholars will practice changing coins for the same value and adding up sets of coins to determine the amount of money. Identifying and adding coins at home is an excellent way to support your scholar in these skills.

In Science, scholars will explore magnets and investigate push and pull forces and friction.  We will explore various items to determine whether or not the object is magnetic or non-magnetic.

Our chicken life cycle project culminated this past week with the hatching of our chicks. Scholars were excited to see them before they were returned home to one of our fabulous team members.

During school spirit week, prior to winter break many uniform items were borrowed from the nurse's office but have not been returned yet. The nurse's office is running critically low on uniforms to loan to scholars. If you have any borrowed items, please return them as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for your continued support and partnership.  Have a wonderful week.

Go Griffins!
