Q3W6

 First Grade News

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a nice, long weekend!

In Literature this week, we will begin reading Owl at Home.  Please send this classic to keep to school by Thursday. We will continue reading Aesop's Fables, focusing on  "The Boy Who Cried, Wolf."  Scholars will reflect on the meaning of a popular saying, "Don't Count Your Chickens Before They Are Hatched." In Writing, we will focus on procedural, or "how-to," writing.  Scholars will write an example of a "How-to Plant A Seed."  We will focus on using concise language and the transition words "first, next, then, last" as we write.

In Math, we will continue Chapter 8. We will review numbers up to 120 and counting money, focusing on the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Scholars will practice changing coins for the same value and adding up sets of coins to determine the amount of money. Identifying and adding coins at home is an excellent way to support your scholar in these skills.

In History, we will make connections between the Mayan and Aztec ancient civilizations and their influence on the culture of Mexico today. We will learn about the culture of Mexico today, focusing on its geography, celebrations, and holidays, as well as key dates in its history.

Thank you so much for your continued support and partnership.  Have a wonderful week.
