 First Grade News

Dear Parents, 

We hope you had a great weekend and are looking forward to the 100th day of school this Thursday!  We are excited to see you on Friday afternoon, from 4–6 pm for Family Game Night. 

This Tuesday, the 3rd, is class picture day!  (There will not be a retake for this picture.)  

Ssshhhhh!  It's a surprise for now.  In First Grade, Friendship Day will be celebrated this Friday, the 6th, with a small tea party including finger sandwiches (Nutella), cookies, and apple juice (tea).  If your scholar has allergies, please contact your scholar's teacher and send in an appropriate substitute for your scholar to enjoy on that day.  

In Literature this week, we will complete the reading of A Bargain for Frances. We will culminate our celebration of the virtue of friendship by participating in a seminar over this classic on Friendship Day.  Scholars will complete the final draft of their personal narrative story.   

In Math, we will continue Chapter 8, covering numbers up to 120. Please check the math note sent home in your child's red folder regarding the coins of money. The Ziplock bag should include 4 Quarters, 10 dimes, 10 nickels, and 10 pennies. Next week we will begin counting money, focusing on values for pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  Scholars will practice changing coins for the same value as well as adding up sets of coins to determine the amount of money.  Practicing identifying and adding coins at home is a wonderful way to support your scholar in these skills. 

In Science, scholars will learn about leaves and continue the discussion about how to take care of the earth. We will also being out Movement Unit. investigate push and pull forces and friction in hands-on activities using magnet.   

For the last few weeks, we have been waiting patiently for our chicken life cycle project to culminate with the hatching of our chicks. Today, Monday we have our first chick!
