Q3 W5 Feb. 5-9

  First Grade News

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a great weekend and Happy 100th day of school!  We are looking forward to seeing you this Friday afternoon, from 4-6 P.M. for Family Game Night. This Tuesday, the 6th, is class picture day!  (There will not be a retake for this picture.)  Please send in the next classic Owl At Home.  We will begin reading this classic next week.

Ssshhhhh!  It's a surprise for now.  In First Grade, Friendship Day will be celebrated this Friday, the 10th, with a small tea party including finger sandwiches (nutella), cookies and apple juice (tea).  If your scholar has allergies, please contact your scholar's teacher and send in an appropriate substitute for your scholar to enjoy on that day.

In Literature this week, we will complete the reading of A Bargain for Frances. We will culminate our celebration of the virtue of friendship by participating in a seminar over this classic on Friendship Day.  Scholars will complete their personal narrative story.

If you have not yet sent in A Bargain For Frances, please send it ASAP.  When we seminar over a classic, it is pertinent that each scholar have their own copy to use when searching for textual evidence to support their answers.  We do have a few copies per classroom to lend, but not enough for every scholar.

In Math, we will continue Chapter 8, covering numbers to 120. Please check the math note sent home in your child's red folder regarding the coins of money. The Ziplock bag should include : 4 Quarters, 10 dimes, 10 nickels, and 10 pennies. We will focus on counting money this week; focusing on values for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.  Scholars will practice skills of changing coins for the same value as well as add up sets of coins to determine the amount of money.  Practicing at home with identifying and adding coins is a wonderful way to support your scholar in these skills.

In Science, scholars will investigate push and pull forces and friction in hands-on activities and using magnets.  We will explore various items to determine whether or not the object is magnetic or non-magnetic.

For the last few weeks, we have been waiting patiently for our chicken life cycle project to culminate with the hatching of our chicks.

Thank you so much for your continued support and partnership.  Have a wonderful week.
